Three-dimensional displays can be classified into binocular displays and autostereoscopic displays. In this paper, techniques for synthesizing an autostereoscopic image from binocular ones are presented. Intermediate- viewing-angle images are first synthesized from binocular pictures by linear interpolation between corresponding points upon those pictures. The autostereoscopic spatial image is then obtained by integrating many intermediate-viewing-angle images. An optical system for performing the interpolation all at once is proposed. Experiments and computer simulations are performed for line drawings and continuous-tone pictures.
