Sir2 proteins known as sirtuins belong to the family of NAD(+)-dependent deacetylases. Seven mammalian homologues belonging to the family of Sir2 proteins (SIRT2 1-7) were identified. Due to catalytic activity involving multiple substrates, sirtuins play an important role in regulating processes prerequisite to proper functioning of the body. They exhibit the ability to interfere with the metabolic processes, growth and cell proliferation, and aging processes. Experiments confirming wide range their activities, raise hopes about the possibility of modulation of biological activity in developing new strategies for treatment of metabolic diseases or age-related diseases.
