This article outlines the different modalities that have been used for the diagnosis of intraabdominal visceral injury. The methods span decades, and their development was driven by the need to provide an accurate and rapid diagnosis of intraabdominal injury for the patient. Some of these modalities parallel the explosion in technology. Each has been validated and criticized but eventually had developed its own "niche" in the assessment of the injured patient.
