Pharmacologic treatment of primary and secondary pulmonary hypertension.

A variety of diseases are associated with elevation of pressure within the pulmonary circulation. Pulmonary hypertension is considered a contributor to the morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions. An understanding of the pathophysiology and consequences of pulmonary hypertension is required when considering pharmacologic treatment. Information regarding the potential benefits and toxicities of the drug therapy for primary and secondary hypertension is necessary when considering the use of specific agents for an individual patients.
