In Poland 8081 TB cases were reported in 2008. The incidence rate was 21.2 cases per 100,000, with large variability between voivodeships from 12.0 in the west to 33.0 in the east of the country. The mean annual decrease of TB incidence in 1999 - 2008 was 3.3%. 7 052 cases had no history of previous treatment i.e. 18.5 per 100,000. The number of all notified pulmonary tuberculosis cases was 7484 i.e. 19.6 per 100,000. The proportion of extrapulmonary tuberculosis was 7.4% (597 cases). TB was diagnosed in 76 children (0.9% of all cases). The incidence of tuberculosis increased with age to 38,1 among patients 65 years old and older. The median age group was 50-54 years. The incidence among men i.e. 29.8 was two times higher than among women i.e. 13.2. The incidence in rural population was higher than in urban, respectively 22.3 and 20.5. Bacteriologically confirmed cases (4892) constituted 65.4% of all pulmonary TB cases. The number of smear positive pulmonary TB cases was 3 047 (40.7%). There were 52 cases of tuberculosis registered among foreigners and 236 cases registered among prisoners. There were 188 patients with resistance to at least one anti-TB drug (3.8% of all bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB cases). TB was initial AIDS indicative disease in 35 cases. There were 744 deaths due to tuberculosis in 2007 (2.0 TB deaths per 100,000). Mortality among males--3.2--was four times higher than among females--0.8.
