The increasing reports of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the introduction of new antibiotics have resulted in a change in prescribing antibiotics in many dental offices. The purpose of this article is to provide a rationale for selecting the appropriate antibiotic for odontogenic infections and to review the basic concepts of antibiotic therapy.
