The electroencephalogram (EEG) is the only functional tool for evaluating integrity of the neuron in the nonawake patient. Applications for this historic technology are expanding. Continuous EEG monitoring can identify cerebral ischemia while it is reversible, thus reducing neurological deficits and improving outcome. This article will review the physiology of cerebral blood flow (CBF) as it relates to EEG, interventions for restoring adequate CBF and areas for application of computerized EEG.
