Recent advances in basic and clinical research of bone metabolism yield various therapeutics for osteoporosis. Several drugs including bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators, teriparatide and denosumab have been established to prevent osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women. Today, we are expecting up-and-coming therapeutics for osteoporosis, cathepsin K inhibitor and anti-sclerositn antibody and active vitamin D3 analogue, eldecalcitol in addition to those established drugs. It is, however, necessary to be aware of safety of emerging drugs as well as their efficacy.
