So how is quality different from practicing good medicine? The author makes a distinction between medical science and the healthcare delivery system. Medical science is the best in the world and the body of knowledge is constantly growing However, the healthcare delivery system does not consistently deliver the care that physicians prescribe. It is in need of improvement. Quality improvement should be focused on those areas of medicine where there is general agreement among physicians. It should be used to improve the system, not judge the care provided by individual physicians.
那么质量与践行优质医疗有何不同呢？作者对医学科学和医疗服务体系进行了区分。医学科学是世界上最优秀的，知识体系也在不断发展。然而，医疗服务体系并不能始终如一地提供医生所开的治疗。它需要改进。质量改进应聚焦于医生们普遍达成共识的医学领域。它应用于改进体系，而非评判个别医生所提供的治疗。
