Thromboembolic disease represents a major threat to our patients after total knee surgery. At present, the significance of calf and thigh thrombi is undetermined, the incidence of pulmonary embolism is poorly defined, and the best regimens for prophylaxis and therapy are not yet finalized. Continued open-minded investigation will be needed to resolve these problems.
