To examine how senior neonatal nurses perceive their experience of a continuing professional development module on their practice.
A qualitative approach was used. Focus group interviews were held with five senior neonatal nurses at band 6 and 7. Discussions were taped and transcribed verbatim and field notes captured non-verbal communication.
Four themes emerged: work-based learning as a new way of learning; barriers to learning at work; professional role development; and complexities of evaluating such learning.
Work-based learning emerged as an active form of learning that can develop personal and professional skills required in the neonatal workforce.
