Implementing the research role of the clinical nurse specialist--one institution's approach.

The mandate of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is to perform research. This paper reviews the historical basis for this mandate and outlines the obstacles encountered by CNSs in fulfilling it. The CNS is often torn between two time-consuming responsibilities: patient care and research. Without a systematic approach, supported by the institution, that provides both material resources and time to conduct clinical studies, research is deemphasized. By establishing a seminar that assisted CNSs in developing research proposals, one institution effectively overcame these obstacles.
