A significant number of women suffer from urinary incontinence, which often requires surgical intervention. Prior to proceeding with surgery, it is essential that all women undergo a thorough preoperative assessment to detect nonsurgical causes of their urinary leakage. This paper reviews the reliability of the initial history and basic clinical tests in the evaluation of women with lower urinary tract abnormalities.
