In the Casualty Department of the Central Hospital in Slagelse, all acute referrals during a period of 48 hours (illness or accidents) were registered with the object of assessing the extent to which lay persons employ first-aid. First-aid had been employed in half of the cases investigated but was considered relevant in 82% of the cases. The circumstances associated with performance of first-aid are discussed and proposals are made for improvement.
