The rapid development in the fields of immunology, biochemistry and biotechnology had a strong impact for immunodiagnosis. The use of monoclonal antibodies, recombinant antigens and synthetic peptides has considerably improved many diagnostic techniques. However, considerations on the meaning of a test result (on the basis of the concept of predictive values) are of prime importance: false use and inappropriate knowledge of the limitations of a technique can lead to diagnostic errors.
