Douglass Seaver, director, health care practice, Arthur D. Little, Inc., Cambridge, MA, says that the public views hospitals as business enterprises and not social service organizations. The result, Seaver says, is that many hospitals may lose their tax-exempt status and with it their unique character as voluntary institutions.
