A review of the literature in behavior therapy for alcoholism suggests that broad-spectrum approaches based on analysis of the specific stimuli which trigger excessive drinking in individual patients are more effective than conventional methods. It appears too that controlled drinking is a reasonable treatment goal for some alcoholics.
