In the years 1985-1988, 3037 fractures in children were treated in the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the University Children's Hospital, 245 of these were operated. The "Fixateur externe" was used in 30% of the 75 fractures of the diaphysis. Our experience shows that this "Fixateur externe" appliance can be used in practically any age group. Recently the stable fixation of fractures is also being practised more extensively in children; either with plate fixation, use of elastic intramedullary fixation or with a "Fixateur externe". We are of the opinion that the "Fixateur externe" should feature more extensively in the overall treatment strategy.
