The prevalence of both chronic heart failure and atrial fibrillation is increasing as a result of systemic multimorbid risk and improved therapy of acute heart disease. Current treatment options are unsatisfactory especially regarding antiarrhythmic drugs. We propose that a systems biology approach to increase understanding of cardiac arrhythmias offers the best immediate way forward. Such an approach would be based on an accumulation of large clinical datasets, and application of next-generation sequencing in conjunction with selected experimental and computer-based models. Such an approach would in turn facilitate the development and targeted application of currently available and novel therapeutic approaches.
