Twenty four cases of periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies are reviewed. The condition primarily affects the premolar and molar region of the mandible in patients who wear dentures. It is suggested that exogenous foreign material, especially from leguminous food impacted into the tissues following tooth extraction, is involved in the pathogenesis of the lesions. In dentate patients there are several other routes by which such material could gain access to the deeper tissues.
