This article provides an update on newly developed techniques that may be incorporated in an office setting to detect microorganisms that cause urologic infections. Emphasis is placed upon careful collection of specimens, interpretation of screening methods, the importance of the culture techniques and results, and the selection of appropriate antibiotics. An additional section on other detection systems, particularly for organisms responsible for sexually transmitted diseases, is included.
