Abstract

Ten years after they were first published, the Dutch guidelines on cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) have been revised by the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG) and integrated into a single guideline called 'Stroke'. This commentary examines the key points from this guideline from a primary care perspective. Remarks on three issues are discussed. First, the increasing sense of urgency surrounding patients with signs and symptoms of a possible stroke. Second, the ongoing difficulties involved in diagnosing a TIA, taking the extensive differential diagnosis into account. And third, the importance of stringent secondary prevention after stroke.
