The transrectal ultrasonography is suited to image the prostate like no other imaging procedure. In a palpatory suspicious prostate with an ultrasonographical echo-poor area a prostatic cancer should be suspected whereas this area in a palpatory normal prostate point to inflammatory changes. In the presence of echo-dense areas or a homogenous external gland a benign change should be assumed.
经直肠超声检查比其他任何成像检查都更适合对前列腺进行成像。在触诊可疑的前列腺中，若出现超声检查低回声区，则应怀疑前列腺癌；而在触诊正常的前列腺中出现该区域，则提示炎症改变。若存在高回声区或均匀的外周带，则应考虑良性改变。
