Denture relining is a well known reparatory prosthetic procedure which provides an intimate contact between the denture base and the supporting tissues. The contemporary prosthetics uses a great variety of lining materials which become hard after polymerisation, and according to their chemical composition and physical properties, are very similar to the denture base materials. This series of articles concerns, however, the materials which maintain soft after polymerisation and are well recognised in the prosthetic dentistry as "Soft-Lining Materials". The article gives a literature review of historical development and main physico-chemical properties of these materials. In spite of many efforts their properties do not fulfil all clinical requirements. The main problems and the clinical experience with these materials are also presented.
