[Modulation, by transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta), of the mitogenic effect of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) on rat oligodendrocytes in culture].

The transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta) is a weak mitogen for rat oligodendrocytes grown in serum-free chemically defined medium. When these cells were treated by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), which is the most potent known mitogen for cultured oligodendrocytes, together with TGF beta we observed that at low doses TGF beta potentiates the mitogenic effect of bFGF while at higher concentrations it partly inhibits this effect.
