Postoperative management of the neurosurgical patient.

Postoperative therapy is vital to the success of the management of the dog with intervertebral disc disease. Client communication and education are necessary to ensure that the patient receives adequate home care. The intake of food and water and the elimination of waste, without unnecessary retention, are necessary to allow for normal healing and recovery. A program of physical therapy, the minimal use of adrenocorticosteroids, combined with proper bedding and skin care will decrease patient morbidity and hasten the recovery process.
