With clones of human T lymphocytes and the means of propagating them for prolonged periods in vitro, several kinds of investigation are possible: the physiological role of cell surface molecules; T-cell heterogeneity and functional repertoires with regard to immunoregulatory and effector activities; the pathophysiology of disorders related to abnormal immune responses; and screening for potential vaccines. To best exploit this technology, collaborations among investigators in cell and molecular biology, immunochemistry and clinical medicine are required. A recent workshop(∗) brought together such specialists.
