The results are reported of a study of 1218 patients with hypoxemia due to respiratory causes. In light of these findings, the literature on the most recent acquisitions concerning the pathophysiology, clinical aspects and management of hypoxemia due to acute and flare-ups of chronic respiratory pathology has been reviewed.
