The author describes the multifarious problems in expertising when assessing neurotic disturbances. The difficulties start already when determining the appropriate nomenclature and the diagnostic and prognostic assessment. Special emphasis is on the problem of the rôle the expert is expected to play as well as on subconsciously exercised influences on his final decision. As an example, the problems are discussed that arise in connection with the so-called "compensation neurosis".
