Primary or reactivated CMV infection can be severe and life-threatening in the immunosuppressed transplant recipient. Nurses must be knowledgeable of the complex relationship between the infection and the compromised host state. By recognizing that all transplant recipients are susceptible to CMV infection, the nurse can prepare to care for these patients in the most effective manner.
