Dramatic progress over the past ten years in adhesive composite and glass ionomer materials has made possible innovative, minimal cavity designs. These designs, by conserving tooth tissue, maximize the strength of the remaining structure and facilitate the aesthetic preservation of the patient's own dentition. The author gives a critical review of some of the new techniques that have been proposed.
