Adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity of several different animal species was determined after i.p. administration of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). 2. TCDD caused a significant reduction in LPL activity and an increase in serum triglyceride concentration in guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters but not rats. 3. TCDD increased adipose tissue LPL activity of mink and lowered their serum triglyceride concentration. 4. Results of this study indicate that profound differences occur in lipid metabolism between various species in response to TCDD and these changes do not appear to be related to generalized toxicity such as wasting.
