A simple and rapid method for the identification of discolored nails is described. By peeling of the surface of the nail at the discolored site with a file distinction between tumor (in most cases malignant melanoma) or hematoma is possible. The extraction of the nail, which is more expensive and painful, becomes unnecessary.
