The purpose of this article is to provide an update on the progress of the American Nurses' Association task force to identify the phenomena of concern for psychiatric mental health (PMH) nursing practice and to propose future directions for the development of PMH nursing specialty diagnoses. This and the two articles that follow were written with the intent of providing information that could be used by PMH nursing clinicians, educators, administrators, and researchers to elaborate, test, revise, and apply work already begun to advance PMH nursing practice.
