A pilot study examined the frequency spectrum of TMJ-sounds, in particular clicking. A profound difference was observed between articular movement noises and clinical clicking. The frequency spectrum of normal movements is clearly different from the one observed for clicking. Therefore phonognathography might be an additional diagnostic tool to elucidate the reasons for individual clicking phenomena with Fourier analysis.
