Diuretic-based treatment regimens for hypertension have consistently reduced blood pressure and the morbidity and mortality due to stroke and overall cardiovascular disease. Studies have been less consistent in showing a beneficial effect on morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease. However, speculations that possible adverse effects of diuretics on lipids may have contributed to the lack of a consistent beneficial effect on coronary heart disease are not substantiated by long-term clinical trials.
