Abstract
  1. Acute illnesses in the elderly often cause reversible confusion. 2. Agitated and unsafe behavior is an attempt by the confused elderly to maintain self-image and physical and psychological integrity. 3. Ebersole and Hess' humanistic framework can guide the nurse to prioritize and meet the needs of the confused elderly.
