The efficacy of flexible bronchoscopy reflects the technical advances that have created smaller, more flexible instruments with better lighting and improved resolution. In the future, the flexible bronchoscopes will be even more versatile with the addition of fiberoptic laser capabilities and improved ventilatory function. Their use provides a safe, dynamic view of even the smallest tracheobronchial tree without the expense of general anesthesia and use of the operating room. A familiarity with the uses of the flexible bronchoscope is important for anyone evaluating the pediatric airway.
