This article discusses some of the sociopolitical and economic forces which impact the organization and delivery of mental health services to the elderly. Focus is on the way cost-containment efforts broaden existing gaps in the health care system. The potential influence of cost-containment and propietary initiatives on interdisciplinary collaboration and competition among mental health workers is also discussed.
