The results of a fact-finding study carried out in 31 postoperative cardiac intensive care units are reported. The purpose of the investigation was to highlight the most important organisational problems and pinpoint the role of the anaesthetists employed there. The results show that: 1) management of postoperative cardiac intensive care units is in the hands of surgeons in 74% of cases; 2) assistance is generally run by anaesthetists and, alternatively, by surgeons; 3) the use of beds is irregular in the various centres; 4) medical and paramedical staff are insufficient everywhere; 5) updating activities are deficient almost everywhere and are generally unsatisfactory.
