Probably no other technique or instrument used in dentistry is so universally accepted and advocated by the recognised authorities and so universally ignored by the practising dentists, as the rubber dam. According to the 1983 Survey by the British Endodontic Society, only 5% of the dentists working principally in the National Health Service in England used rubber dam for endodontic treatment. Presumably this figure is even lower for non-endodontic procedures.
