Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Prolactin has been discussed as a factor likely to play a mediating role in multiple sclerosis (MS). Our aim was to investigate the possible association between prolactin production and clinical features of autoimmune demyelinating central nervous system disorders.

METHODS

Serum prolactin levels of 255 MS patients, 19 neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients, 15 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients, and 240 healthy controls were measured by a heterogeneous sandwich magnetic separation assay.

RESULTS

MS and NMO cohorts had a significantly higher number of patients with hyperprolactinemia than healthy controls. Sera obtained during attacks of both MS and NMO patients displayed higher prolactin levels than those collected during remission. Prolactin level elevations were found to be more prominent in myelitis attacks in MS. No significant correlation was found between prolactin levels and age, disease duration, disability status, number of attacks, and oligoclonal band positivity. CIS patients who converted to MS had higher prolactin levels than those who did not.

CONCLUSION

Our findings support the possible mediating role of prolactin in the immunopathogenesis of MS, NMO, and conversion from CIS to MS.

方法

采用异质性夹心磁分离法检测了255例MS患者、19例视神经脊髓炎(NMO)患者、15例临床孤立综合征(CIS)患者和240名健康对照者的血清催乳素水平。

结果

MS和NMO队列中高催乳素血症患者的数量显著高于健康对照者。MS和NMO患者发作期采集的血清催乳素水平高于缓解期采集的血清。发现MS患者的脊髓炎发作期催乳素水平升高更为明显。催乳素水平与年龄、病程、残疾状态、发作次数和寡克隆带阳性之间未发现显著相关性。转化为MS的CIS患者催乳素水平高于未转化者。

结论

我们的研究结果支持催乳素在MS、NMO以及CIS向MS转化的免疫发病机制中可能起介导作用。
