Human epidermal growth factor--the influence on the healing of surgically closed corneal wounds.

The influence of topically applied human EGF on corneal wound healing was evaluated in surgically closed corneal wounds. In one group the corneal wound tensile strength was assessed after one week. No significant difference was found compared control. In another group, treated for 4 weeks, both eyes received steroids topically and one eye was treated with EGF. The tensile strength of the EGF treated wounds were significantly increased compared to control. The tensile strength after 4 weeks using steroids had not increased compared to the non steroid treated group after 1 week.
