The natural history of early cervical neoplasia and cervical human papillomavirus infection.

This article deals with the natural history of cervical human papillomavirus infection and precancer. It traces the development of the transformation zone and maturation of the normal squamous epithelium. Potential aetiological agents and a possible cofactor are briefly discussed. The natural history of premalignant disease and its relationship to invasive disease is also covered.
