False positive beta-human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) results can lead to unnecessary life-threatening interventions. This article describes two clinical cases of false positive beta-hCG results that lead to unnecessary treatments. In one case the erroneous and unnecessary treatment caused a life-threatening complication. In cases where there is no correlation between the clinical manifestations, imaging and laboratory tests, and there is a suspicion of false positive beta-hCG result, there is a need to repeat the urine and blood beta-hCG analysis, if possible using a different assay method. These tests will raise the possibility of a correct indication for a false positive beta-hCG, thus avoiding unnecessary treatments and their complications.
