A patient with an 18-yr history of Crohn's disease of the colon became infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The patient had a complete remission of gastrointestinal symptoms in association with progressive immunodeficiency. This finding suggests that CD4 T cells and an intact immune response play a central role in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease.
