This year marks the centenary of the beginning of teaching in anaesthesia in Australia. Until 1888 there were no appointments in anaesthesia at any hospital, but in that year two were made. A brief review of the events leading to this change is given, with an even briefer review of the main steps in the transformation of education in anaesthesia in Australia on which the present-day system is based.
