A closed vitrectomy procedure was carried out on 32 eyes at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital between October, 1976, and February, 1978. The Grieshaber/Boston Retinal Foundation Vitreous Cutter was used exclusively for these operations. Details of the simplified surgical technique are described and illustrated. The results are assessed from the technical aspect (the achievement of a clear light path to the retina) and from the functional aspect (the postoperative visual acuity). The technical success was of the order of 80 per cent.
