Bacterial sigma54 (σ) promoters are the DNA-binding motif for σ-containing RNA polymerase (RNAP) holoenzymes. A recent study using a combination of synthetic oligonucleotide library screening, biochemical characterization, and bioinformatics has uncovered a new and unexpected role for σ promoters, encoding a form of bacterial 'insulator sequence' to dampen unwanted translation.
