The development of a red, chlorine-/strontium-free pyrotechnic composition which serves as either a strobe or a flare is reported. The observed strobing behaviour of a red-light emitting composition of Mg/LiNO/hexamine/binder was investigated. Additives like 5-amino-1H-tetrazole and nitrocellulose were used to increase the strobing frequency and achieve constant burning.
